Are Required for
YOUR Workplace?

Introduction

BRIEFING: Fire Safety

The workplace safety program should address fire prevention and responding to a fire.

Prevention includes keeping areas clear of trash, discards and other combustibles.  Flammable liquids should be stored in proper containers or special cabinets.

Damaged electrical cords, switches and wiring should be replaced.  Make sure that circuits are not overloaded.

Prepare for emergencies.  Make sure all smoke detectors work.  Have practiced procedures in place for fire evacuation and calling for help.

Evacuate safely, leaving the area quickly in an emergency, using stairs instead of the elevator, helping coworkers to a designated gathering area where a roll call can be taken.

OSHA standards require employers to provide proper exits, fire fighting equipment, and employee training to prevent and respond to fire emergencies at work.

Emergency action plans should describe evacuation routes and procedures for  employees. Procedures to account for all  evacuated employees must be part of the plan. The written plan must be available for employee review.

The preferred means of alerting employees to a fire emergency must be part of the plan and an employee alarm system must be available throughout the workplace complex and must
be used for emergency alerting for evacuation. The alarm system may be voice communication or sound signals such as bells, whistles or horns.

Employees must know the evacuation
signal.
