When
personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for a
job or task, use by personnel is mandatory under OSHA
law.
Most
PPE must be supplied by the employer at no cost to
personnel. The employer is also required to make a
written hazard assessment of the job or task to be sure
that the right kinds of PPE are selected. Types of PPE include:
-
Eye
protection such as safety glasses with side shields,
splash goggles, welding goggles and shields, and
full face shields.
-
Hand
protection such as rubber, nitrile and chemical
resistant gloves for working with chemical products;
heavy leather gloves as protection against cuts,
abrasion and splinters; gloves that provide
insulation from electrical shock; cut-resistant
gloves for working with knives or slicer blades;
medical-type gloves as a barrier against bloodborne
pathogens.
-
Head
protection such as hardhats, selected based on ANSI
ratings for the task and hazard exposure.
-
Hearing
protection such as ear plugs, ear muffs or a
combination of types to achieve a level of
protection identified through sound monitoring in
the work area.
-
Respiratory
protection such as full-face and half-face
respirators with cartridges, self-contained
breathing apparatus and supplied-air systems. IMPORTANT:
All personnel who use a respirator must be examined
by a medical provider for pulmonary function, tested
for the fit of the respirator, and trained in the
safe use and storage of respiratory protection
equipment
PRIOR TO USE.
The
organization should have written policy, procedures and
a system for hazard assessment as part of the Master
Safety Plan.
