Safety On My Mind

Have you ever wondered how to build an environment where everyone has safety on their mind, where safety is a natural part of the day-to-day thought process? Safety On My Mind describes the change many workers go through when given the responsibility of safety in their workplace. Once employees and management understand the process of developing a safety mindset, they begin to notice safety in a different way because they understand their personal accountability. Safety On My Mind challenges everyone to develop and maintain a safety mind, the mind of a safety professional. (48 pages designed for everyone in the organization.)

Like Who Is Responsible for Safety? this book is tailored to organizations that intend to create an environment of trust where everyone is responsible for safety. It may be used in safety meetings, safety seminars and workshops, or independent learning situations.

Reader Comment: "Safety On My Mind 'Carl's idea of 'the Safety Mind' is fantastic. I shared it with my workers the first opportunity that I had. Sharing the idea of the Safety Mind with a work group not only makes for a great safety meeting. It can facilitate a safe day, month and year. It can really shift ones safety culture."

Introduction

At the Harley-Davidson Motor Company they have a saying "It's a Harley. If you have to ask, you just wouldn't understand." Safety professionals have a similar attitude about safety. In other words, "It's about safety. If you have to ask, you might not understand." Being safe is about acting safe and acting like a safety professional will make you safer. Unfortunately it is often the safety coordinators with their Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credentials who are considered a company's "safety professionals."

Why isn't every worker considered a safety professional and the person with the CSP considered the "company's industry safety expert?" Frankly, safety is a personal thing. Throughout my career I have observed companies trying to determine why their accident rates are high. To lower the accident rates, they hold safety meetings and more safety training programs.

Moreover, they conduct team building sessions hoping to improve team work that will result in a safe work team. All of these are important, but they are not the most significant contributors to a safe workplace.

What is the number one contributor to a safe workplace? It is each and every worker's personal involvement in and commitment to workplace safety. It is what you and everyone you work with does or does not do -- to promote personal safety. It's about having a safety mind.

One of the most powerful ways to increase personal safety is to be an example. People will tend to follow those who "walk their talk," and not those who just talk. Walking the talk is the mark of a true safety professional.

What actions can you take to become a "safety professional?" You must get involved in promoting a safe workplace, be committed to learning, exhibit safe behavior to create your own safety mind.

Chapter 1

Get Involved

How involved are you in your company's safety processes? Do you consider yourself a "safety professional?"
These are just a few questions to ask yourself to determine if safety is a personal thing for you. No matter how you answer the question, you are involved in safety. Being involved may mean that you are merely a statistic. Yep, like it or not, you are involved.
