| Sample Clip: Safety On My Mind, by Carl Potter by Carl Potter copright 2002 Introduction At the Harley-Davidson Motor Company they have a saying "It's a Harley. If you have to ask, you just wouldn't understand." Safety professionals have a similar attitude about safety. In other words, "It's about safety. If you have to ask, you might not understand." Being safe is about acting safe and acting like a safety professional will make you safer. Unfortunately it is often the safety coordinators with their Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credentials who are considered a company's "safety professionals." Why isn't every worker considered a safety professional and the person with the CSP considered the "company's industry safety expert?" Frankly, safety is a personal thing. Throughout my career I have observed companies trying to determine why their accident rates are high. To lower the accident rates, they hold safety meetings and more safety training programs. Moreover, they conduct team building sessions hoping to improve team work
that will result in a safe work team. All of these are important, but they are
not the most significant contributors to a safe workplace. One of the most powerful ways to increase personal safety is to be an
example. People will tend to follow those who "walk their talk," and not those
who just talk. Walking the talk is the mark of a true safety professional. |
